Anastrozole

Nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor; blocks estrogen biosynthesis

Evidence: 6 articles
Goals: 1

Mechanism of Action

Anastrozole is a potent, selective nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor (type III). It competitively binds to the heme group of cytochrome P450 aromatase (CYP19A1), preventing the conversion of androstenedione and testosterone to estrone and estradiol. This reduces circulating estrogen levels by up to 80% or more. Anastrozole does not affect adrenal steroidogenesis or cortisol/aldosterone production. In research contexts, it is studied for estrogen management during androgen administration and for estrogen-sensitive conditions.
