Androgenic-Anabolic Steroids

8 compounds101 articles36 interactions

Synthetic derivatives of testosterone engineered to maximize anabolic (tissue-building) effects while modulating androgenic activity. Classified by structural modification: testosterone esters (sustained-release depot injections), 19-nor derivatives (enhanced anabolic:androgenic ratio via 19-methyl removal), and DHT derivatives (non-aromatizable, reduced estrogenic risk). Primary research applications include muscle wasting syndromes, hypogonadism, and erythropoiesis stimulation. All AAS suppress the HPTA and carry dose-dependent hepatotoxicity (17α-alkylated), cardiovascular, and lipid risks.

Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators

6 compounds38 articles18 interactions

Non-steroidal androgen receptor ligands engineered for tissue-selective anabolic activity in skeletal muscle and bone with reduced androgenic effects in prostate and sebaceous tissues. Unlike AAS, SARMs do not require 5α-reduction and do not aromatize to estrogen. Structural classes include aryl propionamides (ostarine, andarine), tropanol derivatives (RAD-140, LGD-4033), and quinolinones. Investigated for cancer cachexia, sarcopenia, and hip fracture recovery. All SARMs demonstrate dose-dependent HPTA suppression; most remain investigational with no FDA approval.
