Mechanism of Action

Desmopressin acts as a selective agonist for the vasopressin V2 receptors located in the renal collecting ducts. Activation of these receptors increases water permeability by promoting the translocation of aquaporin-2 water channels to the apical membrane, thereby enhancing water reabsorption and reducing urine production. Additionally, it stimulates the release of von Willebrand factor and factor VIII from endothelial cells, contributing to its hemostatic effects.
