Overview
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the naturally occurring peptide tuftsin. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow, Selank has been approved as a pharmaceutical in Russia for the treatment of anxiety, stress-related disorders, and cognitive enhancement. It represents a unique class of anxiolytic peptides that produce calming effects without sedation, dependence, or withdrawal — distinguishing it from traditional benzodiazepine-class anxiolytics.
Mechanism of Action
Selank modulates the GABAergic system, influencing the expression of GABA receptors and the activity of enzymes involved in GABA metabolism. Unlike benzodiazepines, which directly activate GABA-A receptors, Selank appears to modulate GABAergic tone through regulatory mechanisms, potentially explaining its lack of sedative and dependence-inducing effects. Selank also influences the serotonergic system and upregulates BDNF expression, contributing to its cognitive-enhancing and neuroprotective properties. It modulates immune function through its tuftsin-derived sequence, linking neuroimmune interactions to its anxiolytic effects.
Research Highlights
Clinical studies in Russia have demonstrated Selank's efficacy in reducing anxiety and improving cognitive function in patients with generalized anxiety disorder and stress-related conditions. Research has shown that Selank produces anxiolytic effects comparable to benzodiazepines without the associated sedation, cognitive impairment, or risk of dependence. Studies have explored its potential in attention deficit disorders, post-traumatic stress, and age-related cognitive decline. Selank has been shown to improve learning and memory in animal models, and to modulate immune markers in stress-exposed subjects.
Dosage & Administration
In Russian clinical practice, Selank is administered intranasally at doses of 250-900 mcg per day, typically divided into 2-3 administrations. The 0.15% aqueous solution is the standard pharmaceutical formulation. For research use only (RUO).
Safety Profile
Selank has been used clinically in Russia for over 15 years with a well-established safety profile. Adverse effects are rare and mild, including occasional nasal irritation. No sedation, cognitive impairment, dependence, or withdrawal effects have been reported. Long-term safety data is available from Russian clinical experience. Not approved by the FDA in the United States.

FDA 2026 Regulatory Update
As of April–June 2026, this compound was among the 14 peptides formally removed from the FDA's Category 2 restricted compounding list following review by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC). This regulatory shift permits licensed compounding pharmacies to produce and dispense this compound under appropriate oversight, subject to final 503A Bulks List adjudication expected following the July 23–24, 2026 PCAC meeting. This does not constitute FDA approval for therapeutic use. All information on this page is for research purposes only.
